Contra Costa Regional Medical Center & Health Centers has been recognized many times for its high quality and innovative work through the years.

Superior Performance for Opioid Care

In 2022, Cal Hospital Compare and the California Health & Human Services Agency named CCRMC to its honor roll for our efforts around opioid care. CCRMC earned the Superior Performance Award. California annually recognizes hospitals for their progress and performance promoting safe and effective opioid use, providing treatment for patients with opioid use disorder, providing access to naloxone to prevent opioid overdose related deaths, and reducing barriers to care by addressing stigma.

Quality Leader in California

The California Association of Public Hospitals and the Safety Net Institute give annual Quality Leaders awards to public healthcare systems that use innovative approaches to improve care. In recent years, CCRMC & Health Centers has received top honors for:

Vaccine Equity Initiatives (2021): Contra Costa Health Services' (CCHS) vaccination work received the top honor for our distribution efforts aimed to close the equity gap by expanding access in communities and neighborhoods that have been historically disadvantaged and developing an engagement strategy built on long-term, trusting relationships with community partners. CCHS provided over 27,000 mobile vaccine doses at nearly 300 unique locations through the county in most at-need communities, including churches, mosques, markets, restaurants, homeless encampments, shelters, businesses, ship vessels, schools and affordable housing complexes.

Data Driven Organization category for creation of Covid Vulnerability Index (2020): Concern for the most vulnerable MediCal beneficiaries during the Covid-19 public health emergency led to the creation of a risk model that identified those at highest risk for hospitalization. A multidisciplinary social case management team was able to connect with 49% of the identified population and aid with pharmaceutical refills, food deliver and telemedicine needs.

Data Driven Organization category for Patient 360 (2019): This initiative consolidated information from multiple systems and was recognized for providing a centralized and comprehensive view of patient services that allowed primary care providers, public health case managers, homeless care teams and our health plan to view and coordinate all activity and interventions to better support our patient population.

Advanced Access Initiative (2015): The initiative incorporated a series of improvements using a team-care approach to enhance patients' access to care. The judges said the advanced access effort "stood apart because it addresses a significant health care challenge and meaningfully impacts patients' experience and quality of care."

Telephone Consultation Clinic (2013): Through the telephone consultation clinic (TCC), advice nurses connect callers to on-duty doctors for a phone consult. About 75% of patients who are referred to the TCC have their needs met without an in-person visit. In its first year, the TCC enjoyed a 98.5% patient satisfaction rate.

Reducing Repeat Casarean Sections (2011): CCRMC was honored for its program to help women have natural child birth even if they had previously had a C-section.

One of the Nation's Best Maternity Hospitals

In July 2020, Contra Costa Regional Medical Center was named one of the top hospitals in the nation for maternity care by Newsweek and the Leapfrog Group. CCRMC is one of only 231 hospitals in the U.S. to receive the prestigious distinction based on our high performance in key quality and safety standards, including low rates of C-section, episiotomy and elective early delivery.

In Aug. 2022, Cal Hospital Compare placed CCRMC on its maternity honor roll for its reduction of low-risk, first-birth cesarean deliveries below the state's target of 23.6%.

A Top 10 Hospital for Avoiding Unnecessary Services

In May 2021, the Lown Institute, a nonpartisan healthcare think tank, ranked Contra Costa Regional Medical Center as one of the top 10 hospitals in the United States for avoiding overuse of low-value tests and procedures, such as coronary artery stenting and head imaging for fainting.

Recognized Commitment to Patient Experience

In 2017, Contra Costa Regional Medical Center received an NRC Health Excellence Award, which recognizes healthcare organizations for the high satisfaction ratings they get from their patients. CCRMC was honored by NRC Health, a national firm that measures patient satisfaction at healthcare facilities around the country, for being one of the most improved facilities for medium-sized hospitals.

Top 10 Family Medicine Residency in the U.S.

The Contra Costa Family Medicine Residency Program was recognized as a top-10 residency program by Doximity in 2015, 2016 and 2018. The popular program receives more than 800 applications every year for 13 residency slots.

Nationally Recognized Cancer Program

Our cancer program received the Outstanding Achievement Award from the American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer in 2009 and 2015. CCRMC was the only hospital in California to win the prestigious award for the survey period covering the first half of 2015.

Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality

For three consecutive years, Contra Costa Regional Medical Center has been recognized as a leader in healthcare equality by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation (HRC), the largest national organization advocating for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights. CCRMC was one of only 15 county-run healthcare facilities to receive the designation in 2016

Exemplar Hospital for Working With Patients and Families

CCRMC was one of only 12 hospitals recognized nationwide in 2014 as an exemplar hospital by the Institute for Patient- and Family-Centered Care. IPFCC hailed CCRMC for eliminating restrictive visiting hours and replacing them with a 24-hour welcoming policy.

Golden Nugget Award for Health Services (Breastfeeding)

The California Breastfeeding Coalition (CBC) recognized our breastfeeding task force in 2016 for establishing six new outpatient lactation clinics to help moms breastfeed their babies. Tracking data show that mothers who give birth at CCRMC are exclusively breastfeeding their babies for longer since the lactation support program was launched.
