Contra Costa Health Hazardous Materials Programs staffs an on-call 24-hour/7 days-a-week Type 1 Hazardous Materials Incident Response (HMIT) team. The HMIT team responds to:

  • Hazmat releases
  • Chemical spills
  • Drug labs
  • Identification of unknown substances
  • Health hazard information
  • Cleanup oversight
  • Technical assistance requests

Facilities must notify Contra Costa Hazardous Materials Programs immediately upon discovery of a hazardous materials incident in accordance with California Health and Safety Code Section 25510 and the Contra Costa Hazardous Materials Programs Hazardous Materials Incident Notification Policy (Notification Policy). The Notification Policy specifies when and how to notify the HMIT.

On September 24, 2024, the County Board of Supervisors approved a revised Hazardous Materials Incident Notification Policy that will be effective January 15, 2025. Until then, the current Notification Policy remains in effect.
