First-Year Residents
Class of 2027
Allen, Read, MD (she/her)
University of Massachusetts, Chan Medical School
I am from Massachusetts and have lived in New England most of my life, including for undergrad at Middlebury College in Vermont and medical school at UMass in Worcester. I knew Contra Costa would be the perfect place for me after I completed my away rotation here as a fourth year, I loved the full spectrum training, emphasis on caring for underserved patients, and community feel of the program. In my free time, you'll find me exploring the running trails in the Bay Area, reading lots of sci-fi and fantasy books, and playing with my cat, Winter!
Brunner, Johanna "Jo", MD (she/her)
University of Washington, School of Medicine
Though I was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, I’m thrilled to be in the Bay Area where my family has longstanding ties. Following residency, I aspire to work in primary care, providing valuable services such as reproductive care, gender-affirming care, and addiction medicine to my patients. I chose CCRMC for its commitment to health equity, diverse patient population, and reputation for preparing its residents to work in any setting.
Ellis, Maya, MD (they/them)
Geisel School of Medicine
I have always been committed to health equity and improving care for underserved populations. Completing medical school in New Hampshire spiked my interest in rural medicine. I chose Contra Costa because of the commitment to training full-spectrum family doctors and caring for underserved populations. When not working, I love to spend time with friends and family cooking, playing board games, and being outside!
Holterman, Alex, MD (he/they)
University of Illinois, College of Medicine
I am a proud Chicagoan who is ready for a sunny adventure in beautiful Northern California! I chose CCFMR for its comprehensive curriculum, its role providing care for underserved communities, and the happy community of residents. In my free time, you can find me at the climbing gym or soccer pitch, in the kitchen cooking or baking bread, or exploring a city through its parks and food scene.
Iyra, Puja, MD (she/her)
University of California, San Francisco
I was born in Contra Costa County, raised all over the Bay Area, worked as a teacher and in school-based health centers in the East Bay prior to starting medical school, making Contra Costa a perfect fit for me to stay connected to my communities. In my free time you can find me climbing, hiking with my pup, or drinking tea with my friends and family!
Jayawickrama, Shehani, MD (she/her)
University of Texas John Sealy School of Medicine
I am the daughter of Sri Lankan immigrants who was born and raised in Lubbock, TX. I plan to practice full-spectrum family medicine including comprehensive reproductive care in a rural setting following residency. I chose to train at Contra Costa because I believe its dedication to broad-spectrum primary care and health equity in an under-resourced community will prepare me well for my future career. I look forward to exploring the Bay Area and becoming a part of this amazing community.
Klug, Emma, MD (she/her)
Rush Medical College
I grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio and landed in Chicago for medical school. My interests within family medicine include harm reduction, addiction medicine, reproductive health, family planning, and narrative medicine. I chose Contra Costa for its exceptional full-spectrum training and its warm, justice-oriented community. I felt this environment would prepare me as a capable and compassionate physician, empowering my patients to lead healthy lives that reflect their values, beliefs, and goals.
Maristany, Sumiko, MD (she/her)
University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine
I grew up in Corvallis, OR, in an Argentinian-Japanese household. Prior to medical school, I provided pregnancy education at FQHCs through Americorps followed by 4 years working as a research coordinator for contraceptive clinical trials, which further cultivated my interest in working with underserved communities and reproductive justice. I'm excited to be returning to the West Coast and beginning my next chapter at Contra Consta with its robust full-spectrum training, commitment to health equity, and plentiful opportunities for reproductive care.
Rahimi, Roshun "Ro", MD (she/her)
Ross University, School of Medicine
I am an Afghan Muslim Bay Area native, born at CCRMC many years ago, who is excited to give back to her community. I chose CCRMC for its robust training, diverse patient population, and mission to serve those in need with the best level of care possible. Being a child of refugees, my specific interests are in women’s health, promoting healthcare literacy, and the refugee narrative in American healthcare. When I am not practicing medicine, I enjoy visiting local farmers markets and being immersed in the beautiful nature the Bay Area has to offer. Spending time with my loved ones brings me the most joy in life!
Ren, Megan, MD (she/her)
University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine
After spending my early childhood in Canada, I moved to the Bay Area in second grade and have called this home ever since. I grew up in a community composed primarily of first-generation Asian immigrants, where I observed cultural differences that spurred my passions in immigrant health and reproductive health/justice. I chose Contra Costa for its unparalleled training, commitment to underserved communities, and warm people, where I can become a full-spectrum family medicine physician and abortion provider in a region that I love so much!
Spivack, Sarah, MD (she/her)
UC Davis, School of Medicine
Having spent the majority of my upbringing and schooling in northern California, I am thrilled to continue training in my favorite part of the state! I intend to practice full-scope family medicine, with a particular focus on obstetrics and reproductive health, hence why CCRMC was a natural fit (plus the community rocks!). Outside of the hospital, I enjoy quilting, gardening, swing dancing, and spending time outdoors.
Takeda, Caitlin, MD (she/her)
The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University
Raised in Simi Valley, CA, I am the daughter of a family doctor and a social worker/artist, as well as the granddaughter of Japanese-American agricultural workers and nurses. I have spent most of my adulthood in Rhode Island, where I pursued a B.A. in Visual Art and an MD-ScM in Population Medicine at Brown University. I was drawn to CCRMC because of a collective commitment to nurturing physician-advocates in a close-knit community, in addition to my clinical interests in obstetrics, family planning, street medicine, and gender-affirming care.
Yang, Yihui "Ashley", MD (she/her)
Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine
My identities as a first-generation American, a writer, a global health scholar, and my interests in underserved medicine and women's health across the lifespan brought me to family medicine. My goal is to help build health systems that provide whole person-centered care based in the community to the most vulnerable among us. What stood out the most to me about CC is how truly supported residents feel - that despite the depth of training and demands of patient care, learning is still centered.
