Matthew Fentress, MD, MSc, DTM&H
Matthew Fentress is dedicated to improving access to high-quality care for vulnerable patients locally and around the world. After completing residency and global health fellowship at Contra Costa, he joined Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), working with displaced populations in Myanmar and South Sudan. Beyond clinical care, his MSF work also included managing programs in tuberculosis and HIV, assisting with disease outbreak investigations, providing medical consultation for numerous health programs, and training local clinicians in broad-spectrum clinical care including point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS). In addition to his work with MSF, Matthew has worked in multiple other international communities, serving as a physician in hospitals in Haiti, India, Malawi, South Sudan and Tanzania. Seeking deeper training and technical skills in international medicine, Matthew pursued and completed a DTM nd MSc in Tropical Medicine and International Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). He went on to pursue research in POCUS, ultimately exploring the utility of POCUS in resource-limited settings with a focus on lung ultrasound for the diagnosis of tuberculosis. He continues this work to date, having collaborated on POCUS research projects in Peru, South Africa and Papua New Guinea, and also continues to work with Médecins Sans Frontières as an ultrasound consultant. On a local basis, Matthew has cared for diverse communities in the San Francisco Bay Area as a family physician at Federally Qualified Health Centers LifeLong Medical Care and La Clinica de la Raza, as well as with the San Francisco Department of Public Health and Contra Costa Health Services. He is currently a hospitalist and ambulatory care provider at Contra Costa Regional Medical Center. Matthew lives with his family physician wife and their three young sons, and enjoys hiking and playing guitar.
Neil Jayasekera, MD
Inspired by the late Mark Stinson MD, a global health champion at Contra Costa with over 20 years experience, Neil spearheaded the creation and development of the Global Health Fellowship and Ultrasound Program in 2010. Due to the success of the program, Kevin Bergman became co-director in 2015. Neil is a core faculty member of the residency leadership group. He finished his Family Medicine residency training at Contra Costa in 1997. He initially did full spectrum family medicine for five years. He has since worked full time as an emergency physician in Contra Costa Regional Medical Center's Emergency Department. In addition to working in long-term global health programs, he also enjoys providing disaster medical care in austere environments both nationally and internationally and is a physician member of DMAT, FEMA Urban Search & Rescue, Contra Costa MRC and Relief International. Neil believes in global heath care that builds local capacity and sustainability (read the Chinese poem/quotation by Lao Tsu titled "Go to the People"). Past experience includes work in India, Kenya, South Sudan, Sri Lanka, Haiti and Malawi.
