What is a Developmental Disability
A developmental disability is attributable to mental or physical impairment or a combination of both. These disabilities include intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, autism, or other neurologically handicapping conditions found to be closely related to intellectual disability or to require treatment similar to that required for individuals with intellectual disability. The disability originates before the age of 22 and is expected to continue indefinitely, and it results in significant limitation of three or more of the following types of activities:
- Self care
- Speaking and understanding language
- Learning
- Mobility
- Self-direction
- Ability to live independently
- Able to earn and manage income
Or
- As a whole the child, teen or adult shows a serious need for a unique combination of special services and support that would be required throughout their lives.
