After many months of planning,
we are celebrating the groundbreaking of
a new state-of-the-art health center that will
replace our aging Richmond Health Center and
help us better serve West County residents.
Hello, I'm Dr. William Walker,
Director of Contra Costa Health Services and
County Health Officer.
I'd like to tell you about the West County Health Center,
which will be located near Doctors Medical Center in
San Pablo and create a medical hub for the region.
We were able to secure a site along
San Pablo Avenue near Vale Road.
We are grateful for the hard work of the
City of San Pablo for helping find this
new site.
We hope to see more of this type of collaboration as
we move forward with health care reform.
The effort to relocate and rebuild the
Richmond Health Center has
been years in the making.
For various reasons, we were not able to
move forward until late 2009 when
Contra Costa Health Services was awarded
an unprecedented $12 million under the
American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for
exactly this purpose.
The Richmond Health Center is approaching 50 years,
which is old for a health center.
In fact, it's the only one of our eight health centers that
has not been replaced.
By September 2012, we will have a high quality facility
to match the high quality service we offer our patients.
The current Health Center provides primary and
specialty care, well baby visits, immunization and
other critical services to the community.
It was praised several years ago for providing
high quality care despite the aging facility.
We will continue to provide these services.
We think this plan will benefit the
community in a number ways.
It increases the number of
people we will be able to serve;
it increases access to important services;
it is accessible by public transportation;
it allows more space for parking; and,
most importantly, the new
West County Health Center
gives the community the
state-of-the-art Health Center it deserves.

and view conceptual renderings.
Thanks for listening.
