Richmond Public Health Solutions
Richmond Public Health Solutions (PHS) exposes high school students to the principles of public health and careers in the field. Originally developed by the Alameda County Public Health Department, the Public Health Solutions curriculum prepares students to think critically and encourages community and government agencies to prioritize youth voices in policy, systems and environmental change. Richmond PHS provides youth enrolled within the health academies at Richmond and DeAnza High Schools with 30 hours of in-class training on topics including: the social determinants of health, types of public health careers, professional communication skills and workplace etiquette. The program also offers paid internships for select participants and an intern graduation recognition event. Richmond PHS prepares all participating students for post-high school success by encouraging a "college-going culture," especially in communities of color.
Providing students with paid internships and a variety of opportunities to experience "Public Health-in-Action" are essential components of the program. Richmond PHS has placed students in summer internships with health-related employers including Health Leads, the RYSE Center, Lifelong Medical Center and the Building Blocks for Kids Collaborative. Within Contra Costa Health Services, Richmond PHS students have interned with the Regional Medical Center, the HIV/AIDS and STD Program, the Communicable Disease Program, Richmond WIC, Public Health Nursing, the Teenage Pregnancy Prevention Program, the Alcohol and Other Drugs Program.
Previous host agencies have had excellent experiences mentoring and learning from Richmond PHS students who come well-prepared to improve the health outcomes of their communities. Richmond PHS staff are committed to fostering youth-adult and institutional partnerships that ensure that both diversity and equity are core values in developing the next generation of health professionals. If your program is interested in participating as an intern host site, agency partner or if you would like to learn more about the program, please contact Shannon Ladner-Beasley at email@example.com.
