What:
Contra Costa Health Services will be observing Food Day locally by offering food tastings, free produce, nutritional information and recipes on October 24. Food Day is a nationwide event started by the Center for Science in the Public Interest that promotes healthy, affordable and sustainable food. Food Day aims to improve the nation’s food policies and the American diet.
When:
Wednesday, October 24 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Where:
The lobby of the West County Health Center, 13601 San Pablo Ave., San Pablo
(just north of Vale Road near Doctors Medical Center)
Why:
Poor dietary habits have created an obesity epidemic in the United States and Contra Costa County. According to studies done by Contra Costa Public Health, roughly 52% of San Pablo schoolchildren were overweight or obese in 2010, and more than one out of 10 deaths in Richmond can be attributed to obesity. By promoting healthier eating choices, we can reduce diet-related afflictions like diabetes and heart disease.
