Placement Openings:

  • 2 MFT or MSW intern
  • 20-24 hours per week, Monday through Friday only
  • Required days:
    • 3rd Wednesday from 9am-12pm for the countywide intern training that is mandatory
    • Bi-weekly staff meeting on Wednesdays at 10am
    • West Child & Adolescent Services-All Staff Meeting on Thursdays from 10am-12pm
    • Group Supervision every Thursday from 1pm – 3pm.
  • Placements available in late August/early September

Program Description

The Center for Recovery and Empowerment (ROAR) is an outpatient specialty youth mental health and substance use treatment program. The program is a pilot project funded by the Mental Health Services Act (MHSA) Innovation Grant and serves youth ages 13-18 who receive MediCAL benefits or who are uninsured. We are a multi-disciplinary team consisting of a Program Manager, Program Supervisor, Therapist, Substance Use Counselor, Peer Specialist, and Accredited Teacher.

There are three main components of the program: Education, Mental Health, and Substance Use.

Education: Youth attend school in a non-traditional tranquil setting with a low number of peers, ample one-on-one academic instruction, and a focus on credit recovery. Many of the youth in our program have either been absent from school for some time or have underachieved in their education due to a primary diagnosis of a mental health or substance use disorder.

Mental Health: Day program activities include mental health treatment groups, individual therapy, and family therapy. Prosocial peer-to-peer interactions are encouraged in the community milieu. Groups may range from expressive arts therapy, adventure therapy to processing, and peer support. Individual treatment approaches are evidenced based and include CBT, CBT-TF, CBT-E, CBT-P, DBT, CBI-SU, MFGT, and CBSST.

Substance Use: Participants may have one-on-one Substance Use Counseling and/or attend groups related to recovery. These include psychoeducation, peer support, and CBI-SU. Youth who attend the program agree to sober while present on campus and when engaged in treatment services.

The campus is in a scenic location of Point Richmond directly adjacent to natural parks and the Bay. We provide services primarily at the site location although some driving is required to transport youth.

Interns will be able to engage in rehab services with youth in the milieu and a natural setting, conduct family Meet and Greet sessions, complete Intakes and Assessments, and provide group, individual, and family therapy to a small caseload of clients. We provide a $16/hour stipend.

Program hours are from 9:00 – 5:00 PM on weekdays. We are looking for interns that have a particular interest in learning different group treatment modalities and want to actively lead groups with youth. Treatment groups occur 1:00 – 5:00 PM on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Staff meetings are 10:00 AM on Wednesday and Thursday. Individual and Group supervision is provided weekly as is access to clinical trainings offered by Contra Costa County Health Services.
