Pride Month

June 2022

Colleagues:

Contra Costa Health (CCH) has a longstanding commitment to deliver compassionate, inclusive and equitable care to support all people in our communities, including our diverse LGBTQ+ communities.

Every June, CCH celebrates Pride Month, a month that holds special significance for many of us.

Pride Month commemorates the 1969 Stonewall riots, widely considered the catalyst for the modern LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and the plus sign includes other identities) rights movement.

It celebrates diversity, promotes equal rights and increases visibility. It's also an occasion to acknowledge the health care inequities and disparities the LGBTQ+ community faces.

Here are a few ways we work to ensure LGBTQ+ people feel welcome and are treated with empathy and respect:

  • Contra Costa Health's Regional Medical Center and Behavioral Health divisions have been consistently recognized as an LGBTQ+ Health Care Equality Leader or Top Performer from the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation. The HRC evaluates facilities’ policies and practices related to the equity and inclusion of their LGBTQ+ patients, visitors and employees.

  • CCH opened the Gender Clinic in 2016, which provides care for transgender and non-binary people. This includes medication and hormone management, surgical referrals, connection to legal and mental health resources, and other transition-related care.

  • The Pride Initiative is an advocacy and awareness group at CCH. Its goals are to help create a safe and inclusive environment. Members volunteer their time to help integrate practices and policies that promote equal access to health care services, as well as awareness, acceptance and respect for LGBTQ+ people.

While Pride is celebrated in June, we work year-round to ensure people in our LGBTQ+ communities have access to culturally and clinically competent care whenever they need it.

On behalf of the department and our community, thank you for all you do each day to care for and improve the health of all people in Contra Costa County. We wish you a happy, healthy and safe Pride Month.
