Questions and Answers About Ciprofloxacin (Cipro)

The information provided in this document should in no way take the place of discussion with your doctor or health care professional about your medical condition or your treatment.

What is Ciprofloxacin or Cipro?

Ciprofloxacin, also called Cipro, is an antibiotic drug. Antibiotics fight infections caused by bacteria, including bacterial meningitis.
Cipro, like all other antibiotics, does not kill viruses.

How is Cipro taken?

Cipro is available in several different strength tablets and is also available in a liquid form. The dose of Cipro and the length of time you will take it depends on the type of infection you have. Cipro tablets can be taken with or without food. Drink lots of water while you are taking Cipro to make sure the drug doesn't accumulate in your kidneys.
Do not take Cipro at the same time as antacids that contain aluminum or magnesium. They will reduce the amount of Cipro in your blood.

Who should not take Cipro?

Persons who have had a severe reaction to any of the group of antibiotics known as "quinolones" should not take Cipro. Cipro is not recommended for pregnant or nursing women or children under 18 years of age.

What are the possible side effects?

The most common side effects of Cipro are nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain or discomfort, headache, rash and restlessness. It can also cause dizziness and drowsiness. Very few people who take Cipro get these side effects.
Cipro makes some people very sensitive to sunlight. It increases the effects of caffeine and can cause jittering and nervousness. In rare cases, Cipro causes an allergic reaction that can be serious.

Could Cipro be taken with other medications?

Cipro can affect how other medicines work. Tell your doctor about all other prescription and non-prescription medicines or supplements you are taking before you take Cipro.
