Placement Openings

Two placements are typically available for MFT interns and (advanced) trainees. Applicants with prior experience in a crisis setting, or providing long-term therapy or who retain second language skills are desirable and are encouraged to apply.

Placement Requirements

  • Placement is mid-September through mid-June
    • Continuing through the summer may be possible (June-September)
  • Wednesday is a required training day throughout the internship
  • Minimum commitment 20 hours per week

Program Description

Contra Costa Regional Medical Center is a full service county hospital with 164 beds.
The Psychiatric Emergency Services is Contra Costa County's receiving center for individuals who have been placed on a psychiatric legal hold, i.e. 5150. Additionally, people who present voluntarily for assessment, treatment and stabilization of psychiatric or emotional crises are seen and treated. Interns in this setting are exposed to a full range of presentations including mood disorders, thought disorders, drug and alcohol induced disorders, personality disorders and medical conditions. Interns will also interact with individuals of all age groups, language groups, socio-economic standing and ethnicities. Our interns work within a multi-disciplinary professional setting. Interns will have the opportunity to develop skills in risk assessment, crisis intervention, clinical writing and oral presentations, developing preliminary case conceptualizations, providing treatment recommendations / discharge planning / and linking clients with community programs, exposure to psychopharmacology and medical terminology for therapists, as well as developing initial diagnostic hypotheses.
