Welcome to Contra Costa Family Medicine Residency
Director's Welcome Message
Welcome to the website for Contra Costa Family Medicine Residency program in Martinez, California. Our program is devoted to training the next generation of family physicians. We are dedicated teachers, learners, and patient advocates, preparing physicians with the skills to roll up their sleeves and meet medical needs both locally and globally. We welcome you to learn about the program and people who make our "unopposed" Family Medicine residency a unique place to begin your career in family medicine.
I have had the privilege of teaching Family Medicine residents since I graduated from the program in 2003. I began teaching on the surgical inpatient services, lending the Family Medicine perspective to the care of the surgical patient and subsequently helped lead our Family Medicine-Surgery inpatient service, placing an emphasis on the broad spectrum of care the Family Medicine Registrars provide for our patients, side by side with our residents.
Teaching and supporting our residents as they grow into their careers as family doctors has been my calling here at Contra Costa. In 2011, I joined the Residency Leadership Group, comprised of core faculty and the chief residents, which helps guide the direction of our program in conjunction with the Program Director. In 2012, I became Deputy Program Director, and now I am honored to be Program Director.
Our program was founded as a GP residency in the 1950s; in the 1970s we embraced the new specialty of Family Medicine. In recent years we have experienced plenty of change: expanding to 14 residents per class, adding an electronic health record, and taking the first steps of building a Health Home for our patients. Throughout these changes we have maintained the core aspects of our program: high resident responsibility in patient care; one-on-one supportive teaching and supervision across the spectrum of care; and finding value in care of the underserved.
Some brief highlights of our curriculum include community-based Family Medicine Clinic training; extensive practical and procedural obstetrics; hospital-based medicine from surgical, internal medicine and family medicine perspectives; procedural training across all specialties; global health; and structured problem-based learning and personal and professional development. An overview of the entire curriculum can be found here: http://cchealth.org/residency/curriculum.php.
We are a safety-net, integrated healthcare system with its heart in the community we serve. We enjoy tremendous collegiality between the medical specialties and all members of the care team, including nurses, social workers, and administrative staff. This plays a large role in why over half of our graduating residents each year choose to begin their careers working here as attendings.
I hope our website begins to give you a sense of our program and people. Thank you for taking a closer look at us.
