What

Advice for avoiding heat-related illness

Who

Contra Costa Health Services is warning residents to avoid heat-related illness. Children, the elderly and people with chronic health issues are especially at risk.

Why

Hot weather is expected to last through Friday with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Thursday in some areas of Contra Costa County, according to the National Weather Service.

How

Curtail outdoor activity.
Drink plenty of fluids.
Friends, relatives and neighbor should check on people who may be at risk. A break in a cool environment can help.
Avoid hot cars. After 20 minutes, the temperature inside a car can be 150 degrees.
Make sure pets have plenty of water and shade.
Dress babies appropriately for hot weather in lightweight clothing (a diaper and T-shirt).
Watch for symptoms of heat-related illnesses: confusion, fatigue, impaired judgment, weakness, flushing, chills, hyperventilation, dizziness and, in severe cases, collapse, loss of consciousness or seizures.
Call your health provider if symptoms appear.
