As part of our ongoing efforts to make it easier to see your regular primary care provider, we have changed the way we schedule return appointments. Most primary care appointments will now be available within a few days of when you call.
HOW IT WORKS
For a Quick Follow-up Appointment: When you go see your doctor at one of our health centers for a checkup, at the end of your exam if your doctor wants to see you again within four weeks, our staff will schedule a return appointment right there at the health center before you leave.
For a Longer-Term Follow-up Appointment: If the doctor wants to see you again in more than two weeks, you will need to call the Appointments Unit (1-800-495 8885) around the time your provider wants you to come back for a follow-up exam. So, for example, if your doctor wants to see you again in 12 weeks, you will call the Appointments Unit line about 10 weeks later. We will send you an automated phone message at that time reminding you to schedule the follow-up appointment.
We have also improved the way calls to the Appointments Unit are routed so you can talk to a live person faster. Now you will be able to be connected directly to a clerk at your local health center between the hours of 8 a.m. - Noon and 1 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. The health center clerks will be able to schedule your return appointments in addition to staff in the Appointments Unit.
Your provider will still be able to schedule longer-term follow-up visits in these instances:
- Prenatal and postpartum visits can be scheduled up to 35 days in advance
- Well-child visits for children under 18 months can be scheduled up to 3 months in advance
- Pre-operation physicals can be scheduled 3 months in advance
We made these changes based on feedback we received from our patients and staff. Please let your provider know how the new system is working so we can continue to make improvements.
