Rehabilitation Therapy Services

Contra Costa Health Services offers Occupational, Physical, and Speech Therapy services for inpatients and outpatients at three locations throughout Contra Costa County. Both Occupational and Physical Therapy are offered at Richmond Health Center, Pittsburg Health Center and Contra Costa Regional Medical Center (Martinez). Speech Therapy is available in Martinez.

Inpatient Rehabilitation Therapy is provided in the inpatient acute care units and the inpatient psychiatric units at Contra Costa Regional Medical Center in Martinez. Therapists work with patients to assess current needs, identify barriers to discharge, and recommend equipment and post-acute care options with a team approach involving physicians, nurses, discharge planners and social workers. Specialized Outpatient Rehabilitation Therapy services include:

  • Back Class
  • Balance Assessment
  • Chronic Pain Management
  • Hand Therapy
  • Knee Group
  • Industrial Rehabilitation
  • Repetitive Strain Treatment
  • Pediatric Occupational Therapy

Outpatient therapy referrals require a doctor's prescription. If you would like more information, please call the appropriate clinic or center.

Occupational therapists help people with mental, physical, and developmental or emotional disabilities to develop or re-learn skills to be self-sufficient in their day-to-day activities. Occupational therapists work with people who have had a recent injury, illness or surgery including:

  • Traumatic Hand & Upper Extremity Injuries
  • Hansen's Disease (leprosy)
  • Chronic progressive disorders (diabetes)
  • Arthritis
  • Cumulative Trauma Injuries (tennis elbow, carpal tunnel)
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Psychological diagnoses (depression/anxiety and psychosis)
  • Stroke

Physical therapists evaluate and treat people who have impairments that affect strength, balance, coordination and ability to walk or maneuver a wheelchair. They work with people who have:

  • Back and neck pain
  • Orthopedic injuries/surgeries
  • Chronic pain
  • Arthritis
  • Stroke
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Chronic progressive disorders
  • Hansen's Disease

Speech and language pathologists help people who have speech and language disorders. They evaluate and treat a variety of communication difficulties resulting from developmental delays, accidents and disease or illness. These may include problems with:

  • Speech
  • Language
  • Voice
  • Swallowing and eating
  • Cognition
