Contra Costa needs volunteers for an annual count of its homeless population

Please consider volunteering a few hours of your time as we survey the community of Contra Costa County residents who lack housing from January 28 to 30.


Data gathered from the count help government, service providers and community advocates learn about this population, and develop effective responses to the challenges facing its members.

The Point-in-Time (PIT) count also kick off Zero 2016, a national effort that Contra Costa County and its partners joined in November to end veteran and chronic homelessness. Groups including the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the Multi-Faith ACTION Coalition and numerous community based organizations are working together on this project, which involves using real-time data and performance management tracking developed to accelerate housing efforts.

Contacting every sheltered and unsheltered homeless individual in the county is a massive undertaking – 3,798 people were surveyed during the last full count in 2013 – and it requires hundreds of volunteers.

Volunteers will work 4-hour shifts at locations such as food distribution sites, healthcare facilities and soup kitchens, and are asked to attend a 2-hour training session before the count. Your assignment will be based on your availability and location.

Volunteer training sessions are scheduled from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 25 or from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 26.
