Stop Tobacco Sales to Youth: California Retailers and Youth Tobacco Laws is a training presentation designed as a self-education tool for use by California tobacco retailers and their employees. Accompanying the training presentation is an introductory letter to retailers and a clerk quiz. The California Department of Public Health is providing this training pursuant to Business & Professions Code § 22974.8. This law requires that training be provided to licensed California tobacco retailers who have received a warning letter from the State Board of Equalization following a first conviction of a state law which prohibits selling, giving or furnishing tobacco products to persons under the age of 18. The Contra Costa Tobacco Prevention Project (TPP) is dedicated to reducing and ultimately eliminating tobacco use and exposure in the county. This is accomplished by developing projects that change the social and cultural norms related to tobacco use in the community, particularly among youth, and to institutionalize community support for the elimination of tobacco use. The Project staffs the Tobacco Prevention Coalition, and works with other tobacco prevention advocates in accomplishing its goals. Our successes include a youth mobilization initiative, TIGHT (Tobacco Industry Gets Hammered By Teens) and the passage of our Tobacco-Free Youth Ordinance (TFYO), which eliminates tobacco self-service displays and limits tobacco advertising.
