Non-polio enteroviruses are very common viruses and include viruses such as: Coxsackieviruses, Echoviruses and Enteroviruses (like Enterovirus-D68 and Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease). They cause about 10 to 15 million infections in the United States each year. These viruses often cause mild infections such as colds, sore throats, and intestinal illnesses. In the United States, people are more likely to get infected with enteroviruses in the summer and fall.

Prevention Tips for Enteroviruses

It is important for everyone to take steps to protect themselves, their families and their community.

  • Wash your hands often
  • Wash hands especially after changing diapers
  • Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands
  • Avoid close contact with sick people
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces
  • Stay home when you are sick
